- Lesson plan 8 – Week 13 Date of planing: 04/ 12/ 2022 Period 37 UNIT 5: FESTIVALS IN VIET NAM Lesson 3: Acloser look 2 A. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Knowledge and skills - Review the simple and compound sentences - Write compound sentences using conjunctions and, but, or, yet, so and conjunctive adverbs: however, nevertheless, moreover, therefore, otherwise - Write complex sentences using subordinators because, if, when, while, although, even though 2. Competence: - Develop the ability to cooperate with their partners, to self-study, to solve problems. - Improve their reading and writing skills. 3. Attributes: - Be award of responsibilities with festival in Vietnam. - Have positive attitude in English language learning to participate in all classroom activities with the topic “ Festivals in Viet Nam”. - Build good habits for themselves and kick bad ones. B. TEACHING AIDS - Teacher’s aids: student book and teacher’s book, class CDs, projector. - Students’ aids: Student books, notebooks, workbooks. C. PROCEDURE Warm up: Brainstorming conjunctions I. Presentation 1. The simple and compound sentences * Set the scene - Gives 2 sentences: 1. My mother likes cooking very much 2. While my mother was cooking in the kitchen, my father came. - Have Sts to work in pair to discuss which sentence is a simple sentence and which sentences is compound sentence - Ask Sts to answer 1. simple sentence 2. compound sentence - Ask Sts how to know simple and compound sentences - Ss answer - T. checks + A simple sentence is one independent clause
- + A compound sentence is two or more independent clauses joined together. a. Exercise 1 (1-P.51) - Ss work in pair to do exercise 1 - T. asks Ss to answer - T. checks Key: 1. S 2. C 3. C 4. S 5. S - T. explains how to connect each pair sentences with an appropriate conjunctions to make compound sentence. Each clause is of equal importance and could stand alone. They can be joined with conjunctions and, but , or, so, yet or conjunctive adverbs however, nevertheless, moreover, therefore, otherwise. b. Exercise 2 (2-P.51) - Ss work in pair to do exercise 2 - T. asks Ss to answer - T. checks Key: 1. At the Mid-Autumn Festival children carry beautiful lanterns, so it’s a memorable childhood experience. 2. During Tet, Vietnamese people buy all kinds of sweets, and they make chung cakes as well. 3. The Hung King’s sons offered him many special foods, but Lang Lieu just brought him a chung cake and a day cake. 4. To welcome Tet, we decorate our house with peach blossoms, or we can buy a mandarin tree for alonger lasting display. 5. The Huong Pagoda festival is always crowded, yet we like to go there to pray for good fortune and happiness. c. Chu Dong Tu and Giong are both legendary saints; however/ nevertheless, they are worshipped for different things. 2. Tet is the most important festival in Viet Nam; therefore, most Vietnamese return home for Tet. 3. Tet is a time for us to worship our ancestors; moreover, it is also a time for family reunion. 4. The Khmer believe they have to fl oat lanterns; otherwise, they may not get good luck. 5. The Hung King Temple Festival was a local festival; nevertheless/ however, it has become a public holiday in Viet Nam since 2007. 2. Complex sentences: * Set the scene

Knowledge and skills - Communicate with friends well about the topic Khemer festival - Vocabulary: relating to the topic “Festivals in Viet Nam” Bamboo archway,Green rice flakes,coconut,clasped hands,floating lanterns - Grammar: Present simple . Competence: - Communicate, co- operate , self-learn capacity, create capacity - improve the use of English, speaking and listening skills. 3. Attributes: - Be aware of protecting traditional festivals in Viet Nam. - Love their country and vietnameses people. - Build good habits for themselves and kick bad ones. B. TEACHING AIDS - Teacher’s aids: student book and teacher’s book, class CDs, projector. - Students’ aids: Student books, notebooks, workbooks. C. PROCEDURE I. Pre- listening Warm up: *Chatting. - Have you ever been to Soc Trang province? - Have you ever seen a festival by the Khmer? - What activities do people do at the festival? Vocabulary Bamboo archway: vòm tre (picture) Green rice flakes: cốm xanh (picture) Coconut: trái dừa (realia) Clasped hands: bắt tay ( mime) floating lanterns: thả đèn ( picture) - Look at the picture (p53 student book), discuss the following questions with a partner and then write the right word - Ask student write the words - Correct mistakes. Knowledge and skills - Read for specific information about Hung Kinh Temple festival and Huong Pagoda festival. - Talk about a festival they prefer to go to.. Competence: - Be confident and friendly with the new school environment - Develope listening, speaking skills and cooperative interaction 3. Attributes: - Cooperation, respect, having right and friendly attitudes with friends, teachers in the new school B. TEACHING AIDS - Teacher’s aids: student book and teacher’s book, class CDs, projector. - Students’ aids: Student books, notebooks, workbooks. C. PROCEDURE I. Warm up: Braistorming - Work in two teams. ? What should you take if you have a trip to Hung Kinh Temple festival and Huong Pagoda Festival. =>Today, we are going to read about Hung Kinh Temple festival and Huong Pagoda Festival. - Students' answers: Team A: Hung Kinh Temple festival - flowers, incense........ (P54) - In small groups, look at the pictures and answer the questions. - Don’t check the answers with the class. - Skim the passages and check your answers in 1. - Explain that to skim, they must move their eyes very quickly over the text to get a general idea of the subject. - Answer the questions in group Suggested answer: 1. In the first picture, they are taking part in a procession from the foot of the Nghia Linh mountain to the High Temple on the top of the mountain. In the second picture, they are offering incense and specialities to the Kings. In the third picture, they are traveling along Yen Stream by boat. 2. (p54) - Scan the passages in one minute to find the words. - Ask Ss underline or circle the words they find with a pencil. - T may help Ss work out the meanings of these words from the context. Incense, specialities such as Chung cakes, day cakes and five-fruit trays. 3. Because there are many joyful activities including bamboo swings, lion dances, wrestling and xoan singing performances. 4. People join in a procession and make offerings of incense, flowers, fruit and candles. 5. Student’s own answers. III. Speaking: Activity 1. 5a. Pair work: - Work in pairs, choosing one of the two places: Huong Pagoda or Hung King Temple to go to. - Remind Ss to give a reason for their choice like in Example. - Think about what to take with them. - Ask them to use the suggestions in the pictures. Encourage them to add any other items they think necessary and give
- reasons. Go around to help Ss. Activity 2. 5b. Report your decisions to the class. - Report your decisions to the class and decide which location is more popular. - Remember to ask Ss to say why the chosen location is more popular. 5. Example: A: Which place do you prefer to go to? B: I prefer to go to Huong Pagado because I really want to travel along Yen Stream by boat. How about you? A: What things should you take with you? - Lesson plan 9 – Week 13 Date of planing: 04/ 12/ 2022 Period 37. UNIT 5: WONDERS OF VIET NAM Lesson 3: A CLOSER LOOK 2 A. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Knowledge: - Use the lexical items related to the topic “our Greener World” - Use impersonal passive to express other people’s opinion and the verb suggest + V-ing/clause with should to tell someone our ideas about what they should do. 2. Abilities: - Develop creativeness to protect and preserve wonders of Viet Nam. - During the lesson ss can develop writing and speaking skills. 3. Qualities: studious, responsible and honest B. Teaching aids: - Teacher’s aids: student book and teacher’s book, TV - Students’ aids: Student books, notebooks, workbooks. C. Procedure: I. Warm-up: PELMANISM say Believe know Hope understand understood Knew hoped Said believed II. Presentation. Activity 1. The impersonal passive: Form: Active: S+say/ think....S + V Passive: It + be + pp+ that+ S+ V Eg: Active: People think that he is a great teacher Passive: It is thought that he is a great teacher. - Introduce the form the impersonal passive. And then gives some examples to illustrate - Ss say them again. - Ask ss to give some more examples. Activity 2. Suggest: - Get ss read part of the coversation. Pay attention to the underlined part My father suggests we should go by air. ....I suggest going by train. - Ss give the structure. + S + suggest + v-ing + S + suggest S should +V III. Practice: Activity 1. Give the correct form of the verbs. ( ex 2 p53)
- - Ss complete the sentences independently. Ask them to share their answers with a partner. Ask some Ss to say their answers aloud. Give comments and make any correction if necessary. Key: 2. It’s believed that the best time to visit the complex of Hue Monuments is in April. 3. It’s reported that thousands of visitors come to enjoy breathtaking views of Ha Long Bay every year. 4. It’s claimed that Phong Nha – Ke Bang can be compared to a huge geological museum. 5. It’s understood that Binh Dai Fortress was designed to control movement on the Perfumed River. 6. It is expected that the government will have measures to protect and preserve oue man-made wonders. Activity 2. Complete the mini-talks with should, suggest v-ing Ask Ss to do the grammar exercise individually. Remind them to refer to the box in 4b and the REMEMBER! box and use a dictionary if necessary. Then have Ss compare their answers in pairs before checking with the whole class. Key: 2. I suggest the government should limit / limiting the number of visitors every day. 3. I suggest we should control/ controlling the deforestation. 4. I suggest we should put/ putting these valuable4 things in high- secutiry places. 5. I suggest we should raise / raising some money. 6. I suggest we should reduce / reducing smoke and exhaust fumes. IV. Production. Make a dialogue - First, model this activity with a more able student. Then ask Ss to work in pairs. - T may go round to practice in front of the class. - Report their previous partners’ ideas to the new ones. Then T may ask someSs to report their previous partners’ ideas to the whole class. V. Homework. - Learn structures by heart. - Do exrcise C in workbook. - Prepare for a closer communication.

Knowledge. - Use lexical items to describe wonders of Viet Nam. - Listen to a radio programme to develop listening skill. 2. Ability - During lesson students can develop listening and writing skills. - Student will demonstrate groupwork skills. 3. Qualities. - Ss will be more responsible for preserving and more aware of protecting the wonders of Viet Nam. B. Teaching aids: - Teacher’s aids: student book and teacher’s book, class CDs, projector or TV, loudspeaker - Students’ aids: Student books, notebooks, workbooks, posters. C. Procedures I. Warm-up: Brainstorm ƯơWonders of VN Ha Long Bay - Ask Ss to write down names of wonders of VN - Have Ss come to the board and write. - Lead to the lesson II. Presentation 1. Vocabulary - proper name - contestant - spectacular - round (in a game) Teacher helps ss to understand the meanings of the words by using exampls, definitions or translations. 2. T/ F statements prediction: - Get Ss guess which statement is true/ false before listening. III. Practice: 1. Qualities. - Have positive attitude in English language learning to participate in all classroom activities. - Build their love for wonders of VN and their hometown after the lesson. - Be more responsible for preserving and more aware of protecting the wonders of Viet Nam. B. Teaching aids: - Teacher’s aids: student book and teacher’s book, projector or TV. - Students’ aids: Student books, notebooks. C. Procedures I. Warm-up: Chatting ( T- ss) - Do you know any man-made wonder of VN? - Have you ever visited Perfume pagoda? - Can you tell something about it? II. Pre-reading 1. Vocabulary: Activity 1. Pilgrim (n): extremely large Theme (n): the general scene in which an event takes place Backdrop (n): the period during which a king, queen, emperor..rules Reign (n): the subject or main idea in a talk, piece of writing or work of art - T asks ss to scan the article and find the words in column A - Help them work out the meanings of these words from the context. - Get ss to practice reading. III. While-reading Activity 1. Read the article again and answer the questions (P56)
- - T may set a longer time limit for Ss to read the text again and answer the questions. - Ask ss to note where they find the information that helps them to answer the questions. - Ss can compare their answers with a partner before discussing them as a class. Key: 1- It is located in Huong Son Commune, My Duc District, Hanoi. 2- It includes Den Trinh (Presentation Shrine), Thien Tru and the Perfume Temple. 3- The centre of this complex, the Perfume Temple, also known as Chua Trong, is located in Huong Tich Cavern. 4- Its beauty has been used as the theme of famous songs and a topic of lyric poetry. 5- Pilgrims from all Viet Nam do. Activity 2. Work in pairs. Below are some of the things that have caused damage... (Ex 3 P56) - Ask Ss to work in pairs, to put the things that have caused damage to the man made wonders of Viet Nam in order of seriousness. - T may go around to provide help. After Ss finish, call on some pairs to report their choices and give the reasons for them. IV. Post- reading: Speaking Activity 1. Work in pairs. Use the idea in # to suggest ways to protect... (ex 4a P56) - Ask Ss to work in pairs, and use the ideas in 3 to suggest ways to protect and preserve the man-made wonders of Viet Nam. Go round to provide help. A: It is reported that many of our man-made wonders have been damaged. What should we do to protect and preserve them? B: I suggest that we should limit the number of tourists visiting them every day. A: That’s a good idea. I’d like to suggest raising money to restore and preserve them. Activity 2. Report your best ideas to the class ( Ex 4b- p56) We suggested limiting the number of tourists who can visit these important sites per day. V. Homework: - Learnt vocab by heart. - Practice talking about ways to protect and preserve the man-made wonders of Viet Nam - Make note abouta wonder of VN they visited. ( Name, location, reasons for your choice...)
