Architects can design a building (78) _______, create a three-dimensional model, and even go for a simulated “walk” through the rooms or around the outside of the building. Business graphics is another rapidly growing area of computer graphics, where it is used to create graphs, charts and cost models to summarize financial, statistical, mathematical, scientific, and economic data. As an educational aid, computer graphics can be used to create weather maps and cartographic materials. Computer art also has creative and commercial art applications, where it is used in advertising, publishing, and film productions, (79) _______for computer animation, which is achieved by a (80) _______ process. Two – thirds of the world’s populations speaks those languages. More than 400 million people speak English as their mother tongue. Another 400 million speak it as a second language. No more knows how many people speak it as a foreign language. Chinese is the language with more speakers than English, but it is only the language for more than one billion Chinese peopl. English is the official language on one –fifth of the land area in the world. It is spoken in North America, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. In South Africa and India it is one of the official languages. In many countries, the textbooks in universities are written in English. More than three- fourths of the world’s mail is composed in English. More than three- fifths of the radio stations broadcast programs in English. More than half of the scientific and research journals are in English. English is the language of international communication. Part 4: Read the text below and choose the best answer to each question. (1 point) The air above our head is becoming cleaner. A breath of fresh air has been running right round the planet for the past five years. The planet is apparently purging itself of pollution. Paul Novell of the University of Colorado, the co-author of a report on this phenomenon says, “It seems as if the planet’s own cleansing service has suddenly got a new lease of life. Suddenly, there are a lot of changes going on up there.” Estimates of the death toll from urban smog have been steadily rising, so the new cleaner trend could have significant consequences for life expectancy in cities as well as for the planet itself. The sudden and unexpected reversal of several decades of worsening pollution extends from the air in city streets to the remotest mid-Pacific Ocean and Antarctica. Among the pollutants which have begun to disappear from the atmosphere are carbon monoxide, from car exhausts and burning rain forests, and methane from the guts of cattle, paddy fields, and gas fields. Even carbon dioxide, the main gas behind global warming, has fallen slightly. There are two theories about why pollution is disappearing. First, that there is less pollution to start with due to laws to cut down urban smog and acid rain starting to have a global impact. Second, that the planet may be becoming more efficient at cleaning up. The main planetary clean-up agent is a chemical called hydroxyl. It is present throughout the atmosphere in tiny quantities and removes most pollutants from the air by oxidizing them. The amount of hydroxyl in the air had fallen by a quarter in the 1980s. Now, it may be reviving for two reasons: ironically, because the ozone hole has expanded, letting in more ultraviolet radiation into the lower atmosphere, where it manufactures hydroxyl. Then the stricter controls on vehicle exhausts in America and Europe may have cut global carbon monoxide emissions, thereby allowing more hydroxyl to clean up other pollutants. 86. What is the main topic of the passage? A. The decreasing pollution of the atmosphere. B. The changing pollutants in the atmosphere. C. Hydroxyl’s influence on the atmosphere. D. The oxygenation of the atmosphere. 87. The word ‘purging’ is closest in meaning to _______. A. destroying B. refining C. filtering D. ridding
  2. 88. According to the passage, life expectancy partly depends on people having _______. A. access to details about atmospheric pollution. B. recommendations from university research C. improvement in atmospheric conditions D. changes in their lifestyle 89.The word ‘it’ refers to ________. A. urban smog B. a clean-up agent C. acid rain D. the ozone hole 90. Based on information in the passage, all of the following information referring to hydroxyl is true EXCEPT. A. the reduction in the ozone layer is beneficial to hydroxyl. B. oxidization of pollutants is carried out by hydroxyl. C. there is difficulty in destroying carbon dioxide by hydroxyl. D. ultraviolet radiation increases production of hydroxyl. Your answers: 86 87 88 89 90 Part 5: Read the four opinions posted on a travel forum. Then, answer the questions. (1 point) How do you spend your free time? Person A: What is better than lying in the sun all day long? I surely can’t think of anything. When I go on vacation, I like to experience tropical beaches and exotic places. I work hard all year and I try to make the most of my time off. However, I must admit that I tend to indulge more than I normally would than I’m at home. Like for example, on my last holiday to Dubai, I rented a yacht and had a lobster dinner nearly every night. It was so luxurious! Person B: Ever since I can remember, we have gone on a family holiday to Greece every June. There are just so many islands to discover, I can’t really imagine going anywhere else. Each village has its own unique culture, and I have been studying Greek to know more about the islanders. It makes things easier when you have your own boat, which my family does. My dad sailed it over from England when he was a teenager. Person C: Have you ever gone hiking on a snowy volcano? I haven’t yet, but it is on my bucket list. I have been dreaming of going to Iceland ever since I saw photos in a travel blog. Unfortunately, it’s a bit out of my travel budget. Last summer, when I went trekking in the Rocky Mountains of Canada, I took some incredible photos of the breathtaking views. I packed a tent and camped out in the wilderness. It was a great way to save money and I got to see the beautiful stars too. Person D: I am a history major so naturally, I love to go to museums when I travel. However, my thirst for culture doesn’t stop there. I try to go to the sites of famous events and try to imagine what life was like in the past. I don’t care much for the hot weather. In fact, I travel at off-season times to avoid it. I hate crowds so it works out well for me. I usually get a cheaper rate on flights that way, which is a bonus. I use the money I save to book all of my excursions. Which person 91. spends a lot of money on holiday? ________ 92. enjoys outdoor activities? ________ 93. participates in a tradition? ________ 94. enjoys landscapes? ________ 95. dislikes busy places? ________ 96. prefers hot destinations? ________ 97. is learning a new skill? ________ 98. likes seafood? ________ 99. learn about the local area and language before arriving ________ 100. don't have enough money for the things he/she wishes he/she could has, like travel _______ SECTION IV: WRITING (5 points) Part 1: This is part of a letter you received from an English friend, Sam. (2 points) I’m studying different festivals from around the world for a project I’m doing. Can you tell me which is the most important festival in your region and when it happens? Also I’d be very grateful for any information you could give me about the festival itself. If you think it is worth it, perhaps I could come and see what it’s like. What do you think? If I come, will you be free? I’d free? I’d like to see you again and perhaps we could visit the festival together. Now write a letter responding to Sam. You should write between 80 – 100 words.
